FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE State of Play, September 3
Demo, Sephiroth, and the last preview window before the October 22, 2026 launch.
PlayStation’s State of Play on September 3, 2026 did two jobs at once. It put a new gameplay trailer on the broadcast, and Square Enix put the Chapter 1 demo live on every launch platform the same day: Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and the Microsoft Store. Save data carries into the full game that launches October 22, 2026 (Japanese Steam listings show October 23 because of timezone). This page is the dated recap. For how to play the slice, use the demo guide. For the hunt Square Enix teased in the same hour, use the Sephiroth guide.
The IGN preview embedded here is the hour-long hands-on that landed the same afternoon: HD-2D overworld, Lid granting a turn, Fina as an archer who heals, and combat that plays like a timeline, not an ATB bar. It is not the official trailer — that film is named on the trailers page as FINAL FANTASY’s “Official Gameplay Trailer.” Watch one for systems, the other for the Sephiroth cut.
What went live that day
The demo is the entire first chapter, about three to five hours if you talk to people and pick up early Visions. Some level restrictions apply, so you cannot grind Chapter 1 into an endgame file. Store listings have cited about 4.8 GB on PlayStation 5 and about 5.4 GB in other write-ups; trust the number on your storefront. Progress carries forward. That is the whole pitch: start now, continue on October 22.
Square Enix’s PlayStation Blog post walked through the systems one more time: a timeline that shows the next turn for allies and enemies, a stagger gauge under HP, Visions earned from story events and Sanctums of Light, learned abilities that stay equippable inside a cost cap, espers that fight three turns then finish, and a Sephiroth appearance you find and challenge for a special reward. None of that is new math. It is the same loop the combat guide and how to get Visions already teach. The news is that you can practice it today.
Sephiroth, on the record
The trailer cut from a CG entrance to an HD-2D fight. Official language remains a challenge encounter with a reward, not a starter crystal. Later articles also called him a Vision you unlock by winning. Until a Sanctum is shown, keep him on the optional list with Gilgamesh and Ultima Weapon. The dedicated hunt brief is the Sephiroth guide. Do not stall Chapter 1 waiting for him.
What the IGN hour actually showed
IGN’s preview compared the battle system to Final Fantasy X: true turns, no ATB. Lid can hand her turn to someone else. Spells exist that let the whole party act before the enemy. Fina maps to an archer who also heals. Lid maps toward thief despite a giant hammer and stone attacks, and she is aiming at the Cid title — a job name in this world, not only a person. Rain is the fire-sword protagonist; Lasswell is the cooler swordsman. Those roles belong on the party page.
Eurogamer’s Gamescom slot spent about twenty minutes on one dungeon boss. The demo build there came with the Warrior of Light, Cloud, and two original Visions equipped, and hid Noctis in a dungeon for players who explored. That is the right demo habit: follow the story, then poke the corners. Sanctum logic is on the Vision roster. Ranking talk stays on the Vision tier list.
HD-2D is the other headline. IGN called the overworld the most impressive use of the style they had seen: clouds, grass, cameras. That is marketing-adjacent, but it matches the Pixel trailer from July. If you only watch one systems film after State of Play, watch the preview on this page, then play the demo.
How this sits on the timeline
June 9, 2026: Nintendo Direct announcement and $49.99 / $59.99 pricing. Mid-July: Pixel trailer. August: Vision shorts for the Warrior of Light, Cloud, Shantotto, Noctis, then Firion on September 2. September 3: this broadcast and the demo. The Updates Hub is the index. The release date page still holds platforms, languages, and editions. The demo launch article is the store-facing twin of this recap — same day, more emphasis on save transfer than on the IGN hour.
Staff has not changed: director Hiroto Furuya, producers Kei Hirono and Keisuke Nakashima, Lancarse, music from Elements Garden and Noriyasu Agematsu, soundtrack dated October 28, 2026. Single-player only. No gacha. Windows 11, 15 GB, Denuvo on PC — system requirements. Bonuses still claim from Mitra after a story beat; pre-order and editions are unchanged by State of Play.
What to do this week
Download the demo. Finish Chapter 1 with a save you like. Learn stagger on purpose. Equip one Vision per character. If a dungeon corner looks suspicious, check it — that is how Noctis showed up in preview builds. Then read the Guides Hub for the next system, not this news page. State of Play was a door. The rooms are the guides.
This recap will age the day Square Enix names a Sephiroth region or a demo patch. Until then it is the September 3, 2026 bookmark: demo live, Sephiroth teased, IGN’s hour on the record, launch still October 22.
