Demo Launch

PlayStation’s State of Play on September 3, 2026 did two jobs at once. Square Enix showed a new FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE gameplay trailer, then put the Chapter 1 demo live the same day on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The demo is playable today. The full game still launches October 22, 2026; this slice is the opening chapter, not the finished campaign.

This article is the news recap: where the demo went live, what Square Enix promised about saves, and what the Sephiroth teaser actually said. For a beat-by-beat walkthrough of Mitra, early Visions, and the first Sanctum of Light, use the demo guide. New players who want controls and first-hour habits should also open Getting Started.

State of Play, September 3, 2026

The presentation sat Resonance next to other Square Enix footage and treated the demo as the playable follow-up, not a distant promise. Official copy from Square Enix’s PlayStation Blog is blunt: a free demo featuring the entire first chapter, with save data that can be carried into the full game. Press coverage the same morning confirmed the drop was not a PlayStation exclusive. Nintendo’s storefronts, Xbox, Steam, and the Microsoft Store received the build in the same window.

The trailer that ran during the show is the right visual companion to this page, but it is already embedded on the demo guide, so this recap stays in text. If you want the broader film history, including the June Direct cut and the August Vision spots, read the trailers roundup.

Platforms and the Steam app

Download the demo on the platform you plan to buy. Square Enix has not advertised a cross-buy path between Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, and save data does not move between those two SKUs. Pick one Nintendo hardware target and stay there.

  • Nintendo Switch
  • Nintendo Switch 2
  • PlayStation 5
  • Xbox Series X|S
  • PC via Steam (demo app 4474710)
  • PC via the Microsoft Store

On Steam, the demo sits next to the main app and is the supported way to test Denuvo-protected PC performance before October 22. If you care about frame rate, resolution, or handheld docks, pair this recap with system requirements. On a couch, the controls guide is the better first tab once the title screen loads.

What Chapter 1 actually contains

Square Enix’s store text is the cleanest summary: you can freely explore the entire first chapter exactly as it appears in the full version, while some level restrictions apply. Hands-on timing from preview coverage and the live build lands around three to five hours if you follow the story and poke at side rooms. That is long enough to meet Rain, Lasswell, and Fina, reach the town of Mitra, pick up early Visions, and see a Sanctum of Light.

Combat in the demo is the retail ruleset, not a tutorial fake. There is no ATB bar. A timeline across the top of the screen shows the next actions for allies and enemies. Hitting elemental weaknesses fills stagger gauges; emptying a gauge staggers the target, cuts its defense, and can open an Extra Phase. A Sweeping Stagger lets you spend a Vision-specific Resonance at the end of that phase. Espers, once unlocked through story or side work, fight beside the party for three turns and close with a finishing move. The combat guide unpacks Extra Phase timing; the party page explains who should hold which role before you lock ability costs.

Visions are crystallized essences. Story events and Sanctums grant them. You equip one Vision per character, then keep learned skills even after you swap crystals, as long as the cost cap allows. The demo is the right place to feel that loop without reading a spreadsheet first. When you want names and rankings, jump to how to get Visions and the Vision roster.

Save transfer and level restrictions

Square Enix confirmed Chapter 1 save data carries into the retail game when it launches October 22, 2026. That is the point of playing the demo on your launch platform: you are not throwing the opening hours away. Steam’s own wording adds the only official caveat that matters right now: some level restrictions apply. Do not expect every grind path to sit at the retail cap. Explore, learn jobs, and finish the chapter; do not treat the demo as an infinite leveling hall.

Keep the save on the same account and device family you will use for the full game. If you later install the retail build, look for a transfer prompt on first launch. Official support language for similar Square Enix demos warns that an existing full-game save can hide that prompt, so start clean on October 22 if you want the Chapter 1 file to take priority.

Sephiroth teaser

The State of Play trailer revealed that Sephiroth appears in Resonance. Square Enix’s blog says players will be able to find and challenge him for a special reward. That is a full-game tease, not a promise that the fight sits inside Chapter 1. Treat it the way the trailer presents it: a later hunt, likely tied to side content rather than the Mitra opening. When you want optional bosses and post-chapter hunts in context, use the side content guide.

The same event also restated Resonances, Sweeping Stagger, and the Sanctum of Light loop, which is useful if you skipped the August Vision films. None of that changes the demo’s job: play Chapter 1, learn the timeline, and carry the save forward.

What to do after you download

Play the chapter on the hardware you will keep. Use the demo guide so you do not miss Mitra pickups or the first Sanctum. If the job board already looks dense, skim jobs before you spend ability points. When you are ready to spend money, compare SKUs on the editions tool and the pre-order guide. The worldwide launch date, Japanese Steam listing, and language list live on the release date page.

The demo is a rehearsal, not a substitute for October 22. Finish Chapter 1, leave the save where the retail client can see it, and come back to this recap only if Square Enix posts a demo patch or changes the transfer rules. Until then the playable slice is live, the Sephiroth hunt is still a teaser, and the complete HD-2D campaign has not launched.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers drawn from Square Enix briefings and the Chapter 1 demo.

When did the FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE demo go live?

September 3, 2026, the same day as PlayStation’s State of Play. It is playable today on Switch, Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, and the Microsoft Store.

Does demo save data transfer to the full game?

Yes. Square Enix confirmed Chapter 1 saves carry into the retail game when it launches October 22, 2026. Play on the platform you intend to buy. Details and routing live in the demo guide.

Is Sephiroth in the Chapter 1 demo?

Square Enix revealed a Sephiroth challenge with a special reward during State of Play. That is a teaser for the full game, not a confirmed Chapter 1 boss. Optional hunts are covered in side content.

What is the Steam demo app ID?

4474710. Use that app on the Steam account that will own the retail game so the save is waiting on October 22.

How long is the demo, and are there caps?

The full first chapter, about three to five hours. Square Enix says some level restrictions apply while the chapter itself matches the retail opening. Combat rules are explained in the combat guide.

Should I play Switch or Switch 2?

Pick one. There is no advertised upgrade path or save move between those two Nintendo versions. Match the demo to the SKU you will purchase, then confirm extras on the editions tool.
