FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE How to find Sephiroth

A challenge encounter with a special reward — not a starter Sanctum of Light crystal.

Sephiroth Guide

Sephiroth is the one name State of Play would not let you miss. On September 3, 2026, Square Enix put a fiery CG entrance on screen, then cut into an HD-2D boss fight against the One-Winged Angel. The official line on PlayStation Blog is that you find and challenge him in hopes of winning and unlocking a special reward. Later coverage also frames that reward as a Vision you can equip. Neither version makes him a default Sanctum of Light crystal you pick up on the Grandshelt road. Treat this page as a hunt brief, not as a day-one loadout.

The full game launches October 22, 2026. The Chapter 1 demo that is playable today does not document a complete Sephiroth farm. Use the demo walkthrough for the opening hours, then come back here when you are planning the optional fight. Pair it with side content for Gilgamesh, Ultima Weapon, and the Chamber of Arms, and with the Vision roster so you do not confuse a challenge prize with Cloud or the Warrior of Light.

The gameplay trailer on this page is the State of Play cut Square Enix posted the same day the demo went live. It is the film that shows the CG-to-pixel handoff. Watch it for the fight’s tone; do not treat a trailer as a move list.

What Square Enix actually confirmed

Three facts are solid. First, Sephiroth appears in FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE. Second, the appearance is a fight you seek out, not a story beat that auto-slots him on Rain after the Earth Shrine. Third, winning is tied to a special reward. PlayStation Blog’s wording is “find and challenge.” That is hunt language. It sits next to Gilgamesh and Ultima Weapon on the optional board, not next to Charlotte or Leah on the early Vision board.

Some outlets, writing after the trailer, said Sephiroth is both a boss and a Vision. That matches how Resonance already treats espers: you beat Ramuh in an optional trial, then you summon him. If the same loop applies here, the Vision is the prize, not the ticket in. Until a Sanctum of Light named after him is shown, keep him off Getting Started loadouts and off the starter column of the Vision tier list.

Do not invent a map pin. Square Enix has not published a region, a level gate, or a quest giver. If a video thumbnail shows a late-game arena, treat it as marketing. The world page is for Lapis geography that is actually named: Grandshelt, Dilmagia, Olderion, Zoldaad, Mysidia, Mitra. Put Sephiroth in a folder labeled “optional, after you have a stagger plan.”

How the fight will play, based on Resonance’s rules

You will not get an ATB bar. The timeline at the top of the screen still runs left to right. The stagger gauge under HP still decides whether a dangerous turn happens. Sweeping Stagger — emptying every enemy gauge in one turn — still unlocks a Vision Resonance in Extra Phase. Those rules are the combat guide. Sephiroth does not replace them. He tests whether you learned them.

Eurogamer’s Gamescom hour spent about twenty minutes on a single dungeon boss. Preview bosses in this game are long, telegraphed, and built around elements, buffs, and stagger, not around mashing Attack. Build for that. Lid can grant her turn to another character. Spells exist that stack the party’s turns before the enemy acts. Fina is an archer who also heals. Those notes from IGN’s September preview belong in your party plan before you walk into a named legend fight.

Equip Visions that actually stagger. Cloud’s physical-plus-lightning kit, Firion’s wind and lightning hits, Lightning’s follow-up stagger skills, Tronn’s ice, and Tidus’s Haste are the tools the roster already explains. One Vision per character. Mix learned abilities inside the cost cap, as the jobs guide describes. If you walk in with four un-awakened crystals and no Extra Phase plan, the trailer boss will look shorter than your attempt.

Espers are a separate burst: three turns, then Hellfire, Diamond Dust, Gaia’s Wrath, Lunatic Voice, or Judgment Bolt. They do not occupy a Vision slot. If you have already beaten Ramuh in his optional trial, that summon is a tool for this hunt too. Details sit on side content.

Demo versus retail

The demo is Chapter 1, about three to five hours, with save transfer and some level restrictions. Store pages have cited roughly 4.8 GB on PlayStation 5 and about 5.4 GB in other listings — confirm the number in your storefront. Eurogamer’s Gamescom build handed out the Warrior of Light, Cloud, and two original Visions, and hid Noctis in a dungeon for players who explored. That is the right mindset: finish the teaching chapter, pick up the Sanctum on your road, then treat Sephiroth as later content.

Do not stall the demo waiting for a One-Winged Angel. The State of Play film is a promise about the full game that launches October 22, 2026, not a Chapter 1 boss. If Square Enix later puts a teaser fight in the demo, this page will say so. Until then, your job in the opening hours is stagger, one Vision per character, and a save you trust.

What to do after you win

If the reward is a Vision, slot it like any other crystal: one per character, affinity in battle, magicite to awaken. Do not overwrite a kit you already spent rare magicite on until you have read how to get Visions. If the reward is an item, a weapon, or a cosmetic, claim rules for other bonuses already point at the Mitra inn postbox — see the pre-order guide for how that mailbox works. Do not assume Sephiroth’s prize uses the same box.

Keep Gilgamesh, the Colosseum, the Chamber of Arms, and Ultima Weapon on the same optional list. They are the rest of the completionist 60-to-80-hour path previewed at 30 to 40 hours for the story. Sephiroth is the celebrity name on that list. The fight is the test; the Guides Hub is the rest of the syllabus.

Come back to this page when Square Enix names a region or a level. Until then, practice Sweeping Stagger in Chapter 1, keep Sephiroth off your starter farm, and watch the trailer for the tone of the hunt rather than for a pin on the map of Lapis.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers drawn from Square Enix briefings and the Chapter 1 demo.

Is Sephiroth in the Chapter 1 demo?

Square Enix has not listed him as a Chapter 1 boss. The demo is the opening chapter with save transfer. Plan the hunt for the full game that launches October 22, 2026. Play instructions: demo guide.

Is Sephiroth a starter Vision?

No. Official language is a challenge you find, with a special reward. Some reports also call that reward a Vision. Keep him off early Sanctum lists. Roster context: Vision roster.

How should I build for the fight?

Timeline, stagger, and Sweeping Stagger still rule. Use Lid's turn grant, Fina's healing, and Visions that actually break gauges. Read the combat guide and jobs.

Where was Sephiroth revealed?

PlayStation's State of Play on September 3, 2026, in the same window as the demo. Recap: State of Play. Trailer index: trailers.

Does beating him replace Cloud or the Warrior of Light?

No. One Vision per character. A prize crystal would be another slot option, not an automatic overwrite. Mixing kits is how to get Visions.
